The prospective members
of the Kiwanis Club of City
View first met in the old City
View United Church on September 8, 1954. On
October 6th of that year the club was
formally accepted by Kiwanis International
and the presentation of the Club Charter
took place at a Dinner Dance held at the
Convention Center at Lansdowne Park on
November 29, 1954. The Kiwanis Club of
Westboro was the sponsoring club. In
February 1955, the club was incorporated as
a "not for profit"
corporation.
In the early years of
the club's existence, the majority of
its community service work was concentrated
in the City View area of the Township of
Nepean. The community lacked the civic and
social structure to provide extensive
recreational facilities so many of the
Kiwanis Club of City View's initial
activities were directed toward meeting
those needs. Outdoor skating rinks, a ski
school at Hog's Back, a playground
set-up in a local park and a swim school at
Mooney's Bay were just some of the
endeavours which the club undertook to meet
the needs of the growing community.
In 1986, the club
formally changed its name to the
Kiwanis Club of Nepean to
more accurately reflect its geographical
area of service. Over the years, the
club's fundraising and service focus
has broadened to include involvement in a
wide range of community service projects
throughout Nepean and the surrounding area.
The Queensway Carleton Hospital, the 872
Kiwanis Air Cadet Squadron, the Aktion Club
of Ottawa, minor sports in the community,
the Kiwanis Music Festival, Youville
Centre, the Ottawa Blind Curlers Club, West
End Community Lunch Program, Child and
Youth Friendly Ottawa, Friends of Hospice -
Nepean Resource Centre, City View United
Church Christmas Hampers, as well as
scholarships and bursaries to local high
schools, community colleges and
universities, are some of the organizations
and individuals supported by our
club.
Fundraising activities
such as the sale of Christmas trees and
cakes, the sale of Entertainment Books, the
sale of CHEO Lottery tickets, the sale of
Cruise lottery tickets and the annual
garage sale have also helped in raising the
club's profile within the community.
Club members are also active serving
dinners to the needy, assisting at bingo
games at seniors' residences, cleaning
up trash under the "Adopt A
Highway" Program, canvassing and
volunteering for the Heart and Stroke
Society, selling Daffodils for the Cancer
Society, and volunteering at local Blood
Donor Clinics.
Since its inception in
1954, the Kiwanis Club of Nepean has
collected and distributed over one million
dollars, mostly to local non-profit and
community charities. The club's Board
of Directors make the final decision on the
allocation of financial assistance based on
recommendations from the Community Services
Committee, which actively reviews all
requests received by the club.
The Kiwanis Club of Nepean
holds dinner meetings on the first and third
Wednesdays of each month at the Centurion
Conference and Event Center at 6:45 p.m. In
addition to listening to a wide range of
informative speakers, the meetings provide an
opportunity for fellowship and the discussion
of fundraising and service activities of the
club.
In 2004, we celebrated
our first fifty years of existence within
the worldwide family of Kiwanis
International. The Kiwanis Club of Nepean
looks forward to meeting the challenges of
community service in the years ahead.
Individuals who share our passion for
community service and assisting young
children are encouraged to explore
membership opportunities with our
club.
